W:hsn our diary

This page is where we are going to record in images/words and more, the things that we are doing during June 2012.

Fri 29th June (evening)
No 93's closing party

Gareth made one of his famous cakes and we put up the fairy lights to celebrate our time at Winner Street and to say thank you to all our supporters

Fri 29th June (morning)
LAL language school were our last visitors to no 93. Gareth treated them to a history tour and then we had some drinks back at the shop where Holly discussed her work. What a lovely bunch they were and their English was very impressive!

Thursday 28th June
Starting to make the Postcard from Winner Street: An Artists Toolkit

Ria Hartley hosted an event at the shop.  People who had been involved in the project gathered to discuss and evaluate the project.  Ria then helped us to write the first draft of three postcards.  These postcards will briefly explain this project and then offer advice based on our experiences.  Thanks to Alex and Loraine from ROC Creative, Ronnie Sharpe ( Winner Street shopkeeper), Matthew from BID, Anna Gilroy from Torbay Arts Development.  To look at the evaluation material visit the evaluation page here on this blog.  Below are a couple of pics of the work we began.  The final postcards will be available mid August from us and from Creative Torbay.

Sat 23rd June
Our last History Tour!

Ken outshone himself while leading over 18 locals and visitors ( from Plymouth, Brixham and Totnes) around the sights and sounds of Winner Street.  In the crowd was artist and project friend  Ria Hartley, shop regular Paul Beaumont and Matthew from Torbay Bookshop and his son.  We also had a visitor from last week who enjoyed it so much that he came again with his son!

Interview on Soundart Radio

After the tour we headed off to Soundart Radio at Dartington to be interviewed by Lucinda.
A really lovely show where we talked about the project and listened to the interviews and soundtracks made by Lucinda, ROC and Curledge Street Primary School.

Tues 19th and Fri 22nd June
Event for HE/FE Art students

On Tuesday had some A level Art students come over from Keviccs in Totnes with their teacher Ben Moon.  They had an artist talk and also then made their own work in response to Winner Street. On Friday Nicola Perrott from Dartmouth Academy and some A level Art and Photography students called in for their visit and to add to the 'Object mapping' of Winner Street. The Dartmouth group visited shops and the Kevvic group explored the external features of the street.

Tues 19th June
Palace Theatre Private View.

This event was for the audience of the Palace Theatre.  Tonight they were watching Agatha Christies 'Black Coffee'.  Before the show they came over to the shop for a private view, artist talk, drink and snacks.  A really busy evening with 16 members of a group from Milton keynes all dressed in 1940s finery joining several others in the shop.

While everyone was watching the first act of the play we set up an exhibition in the bar of the Palace Theatre so more people could see the work and engage with the project.  We think approx 60 people came in and out which is great!  Also really interesting for us to see the work in different setting.

The Palace Theatre just round the corner from No. 93

Beautiful evening and the view of Palace Avenue gardens.  This was where the flatpole cabbage used to be grown and also where the Paignton Pudding Riots happened!

Thurs 14th June
ROC Creative visit their work at Paignton Library
Holly and Roc Creative went to Paignton Library to check out their portraits they drew of the Winner street shopkeepers, and also to admire the model that Curledge Street Primary had made. Afterwards they all went back for tea and cake at no 93 and Holly gave them a short talk about her art work.

Holly's Private view
Lovely evening with friends and local arts professionals coming together to look at Hollys new work. Thanks to all who braved the "30 days worth of rain in one day" weather! To see more of the work in the exhibition visit Hollys work page.

Weds 13th June
Curledge Street private view and thank you get together at the library

Here they are getting ready for slideshow celebrating their work and also viewing their model for the first time.

Tues 12th June
Hayes Primary School Winner Street visit -
We had a lovely morning with Year 6 class from Hayes Primary school just up the road.  They came on a history tour using our map and then had refreshments while learning more about the history of the street.  We were based in the beautiful baptist church hall just up Clifton Road.

Sat 9th June
Our first day of history tours.

The morning tours were busy with local families signing up to join in.

The afternoon slot was fully booked and the weather managed to hold off for us. We also got the chance to go up the Bishops tower, what a view from there! Make sure you book into our next history tour on Sat 16th, there is one at 11am or 3pm.

Weds 6th June
Busy day! Holly at the shop running drop in family workshops.

Gareth at the library installing the model and ROC portrait exhibition ( see the exhibition page to find out more)

Several people calling in to say hello and find out more about what we are up to. One of the highlights of the day was Callum who came in to do a workshop and ended up fixing our badge machine, making some very nice promotional labels for our window and installing a little overnight window display of our maps and a badge he made. Cheers Callum!

Tuesday 5th June
Tidy up day! Having a good old tidy after our excellent opening party.  Also had a couple of families in to do some free half term art activities.

Also getting the model and visuals ready for install at the library tm.

Sun 3rd June

We went to the Winner Street Jubilee party in the Baptist Church Hall.  Holly premiered  her cry and  sandwiches, sausage rolls and tea were consumed! We will post footage of Hollys cry here and on her new page on the blog - both coming soon! Here are some photos to whet your appetite!

In the evening we had the shop opening at No.93.  This was a brilliant evening with  40+  people joining us to celebrate the opening of the shop, watch Holly do her cry again  and also look at the work installed in the shop. We had visitors from Winner Street, other parts of Paignton, Totnes, Exeter, Dartmouth and London!

Sat 2nd June
We spent today at the Geopark Festival on Paignton Seafront.  We ran workshops and spread the word about  the project.  A brilliant day! 100 personalised sketchbooks made by children, about 40 badges and a lot of promotion (and lots of interest too!) Nice work!
