Holly Smith is a visual
artist based in the South West. She focuses on traditional livelihoods, the
communities within them and their success in contemporary Britain. She works by
undertaking historical research, site visits and interviews.
Recent work includes a short
film ‘Pg 106 Revisited 2008 ‘Family and Kinship of East London, 1957’ (Group
Show, Trinity Wharf, London) the film explores the issues that face local
traders and how ‘local characters’ working in the shops can help sustain their
community. The film features a family of market traders in the East End.
Smith also works within
rural settings. ‘Views of the Country’ (Wimbledon College of Art, 2008) was a
participatory work in which visitors watched short films that documented
farmers and local residents of South Hams discussing changes in rural
livelihoods. Visitors also enjoyed a cream tea using a commemorative tea set
painted by a Devon based Arts Society. Smith aimed to question tourist
consumerism and contrast rural idylls and rural realities. Smith works across
various medium most often in drawing, collage and film.
Gareth Ballyn is a curator
based in the South West. Specialising in participatory work across a variety of
contexts. Recent projects include a residency at Dartmouth Academy, ‘Through
their eyes’, featured mixed media work made by students about WWII in
Dartmouth.
He works with artists
including Ellie Harrison, Kate Marshall and Laura Kikauka. Ballyn has curated
spaces at Phoenix, Exeter and Dartington Gallery. He has been commissioned to
make an interactive work with Marshall for Tagore 2012 Festival at Dartington.
He has also managed large events such as ultimateDart: MA show 2010 at
University College Falmouth. Ballyn also worked on A Circle at Cargo, Millbay
(BAS, Plymouth 2011).
